In early 2010, Intel released information about its new 2010 Core processor family--the i7, i5 and i3 chips that offer software compatibility with earlier IA-32 (x86-family) processors. Although most of the new chips will find homes in PCs of various types, Intel highlighted 12 devices aimed at embedded devices with the following information in its press release:

The new 2010 Intel Core embedded processors target devices that leverage PC-like operations in the smarter connected world, including ticket kiosks and self check-out machines, ATMs, digital signs, medical equipment, communications gear and industrial machines. These embedded devices can optimize workloads, conserve power consumption, remotely manage their connected network, and even gather metrics based on video analytics for more effective advertising campaigns.

Intel also expanded the performance-per-watt platform choices for embedded by adding error correcting code memory for applications that require a higher data integrity standard. The embedded processors, together with Intel 5 Series chipsets, offer an extended, seven-year life cycle that better matches how long these devices are in the marketplace.

I suppose these new microprocessors will find uses in some embedded applications, but the power consumption for these chips runs from 18 to 95 W, yes that's watts. Intel's i3, i5, and i7 MPUs might replace ICs that dissipate more power, but when I hear about processors for embedded systems I think in terms of milliwatts and very low-power sleep or standby modes. That's why I consider Intel's embedded devices as "hot." According to Intel's information, the company expects its MPU chips to go into 200 embedded devices. I can't imagine what they'll be, so I welcome ideas and predictions. And I have no idea what "video analytics" means.
