If you use the I2C (I-squared-C, or I-two-C) bus to communicate between ICs, you could run into a problem with incompatible bus voltages. One I2C chip might provide a 3.3V I2C port while other I2C ports operate at, say, 1.8V. Fairchild's FXMA2102 aims to overcome that problem with an 8-lead MicroPak or ultrathin micro-leadframe package (MLP).
The FXMA2102 chip operates from two power supplies, each of which can supply between 1.65 and 5.5 volts, so you can use the chip in many circuits. Each "side" of the I2C-translator chip remains electrically isolated from the other. So you can use the FXMA2102 as a bus isolator or repeater as well as a translator. Port A tracks the Vcc-a power input and Port B tracks the Vcc-b power input. Both the A and B port act as transceivers and each has an automatic direction-sense capability. Thus, "Either port may sense an input signal and transfer it as an output signal to the other port," according to Fairchild's abbreviated data sheet that also mentions the need for external pull-up resistors.
